case study

Identifying Spillback

Transurban analysed driver behaviour to identify spillback congestion and understand how drivers behave accordingly.

On the M7 off-ramp at Glendenning, there is data that shows a number of rear-to-end crashes. Engineers theorise spillback might be the culprit, causing passing cars to brake or swerve harshly to avoid hitting cars in the exit lane.

By analysing car movement, swerving, and braking, Transurban found evidence of spillback onto the mainline that was causing drivers to swerve or brake violently to avoid a rear-to-end crash.

Data in Compass' Road Intelligence suite found that there was evidence of harsh brakes and swerving towards the right.

There is evidence of high g-forces at high speeds in this section of the road.
The X-acc graph shows intense braking across the speed range as well as sudden acceleration at higher speeds. The Y-acc graph shows very intense right turns at those high speeds.
